Georgi Minchev, Fragment of something bigger, Carrara marble, 100/170/100 cm. .

Sculpture by Georgi Minchev

In 2015 and 2016 Georgi Minchev participated in the exhibition of contemporary art organized by NordArt. The exhibition is presented his work "A fragment of something bigger."
Based on former visual and emotional experience of their perceptions, people have gathered a complex of knowledge that they use by default. Due to this complex of knowledge, it is enough for us to look at simple geometric shapes from one angle only in order to decide which exact geometric shape we look at. This property of human perceptions unlocks our ability to frame up, to build in our mind. In this way the spatial forms are easily and quickly identifiable, they become communicative.
The design in my project called “Fragment of something bigger” is based on confronting opposite and contrasting geometric shapes – a sphere and a cube. Moreover I use the relationship between the inner and the outer space as a formula to determine the vision of the project. The outer space is oval and complete. The inner space is formed by multiple intersecting walls, corners and edges. Through so composed elements I aim to suggest a sense of architecture, of strategic planning, but also to remind the complexity of the human nature.
This sculpture is made by making openings from the surface towards the core. The cross-section is formed by parallel or perpendicular walls. They always join at right angles of 90 degrees. Thus three spatial planes are clearly constructed – height, length and width.
The work was created during the Sculpture Symposium
Each year the exhibition is preceded by the highly respected international NordArt Symposium, bringing together different generations of artists to talk about art, establish new contacts, share experiences and make art – all reflecting the ethos of NordArt itself.

Each May since 2000, small groups of sculptors from many nations have worked together at the symposium. The resulting pieces, some weighing several tonnes, are displayed during the summer in the Carlshütte and the neighbouring sculpture park, creating imposing open-air galleries. Building on the great success of this event, a painters’ symposium was introduced in 2008.
Some people may find north Germany bleak, but its beauty is undeniable. Few exhibition spaces express its unique atmosphere so eloquently as the Carlshütte, a former iron foundry operated by the first manufacturing company in the dukedoms of Schleswig and Holstein. Opened in 1827 and closed in 1997, this site in the town of Büdelsdorf is an impressive industrial monument. With its historical buildings, the colossal foundry halls, the extensive park with its old trees and an exhibition café, the Kunstwerk Carlshütte has developed over the years into a very special place for exhibitions, concerts, readings, theatre performances and film screenings.

Since 1999 the NordArt has established itself as one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art in Europe which takes place anually in the summer months. The NordArt is an overall work of art in its own right and is designed as such each year. More than 200 international artists, selected by a jury, present a comprehensive panorama of contemporary art. Each individual work not only speaks for itself but also creates new perspectives when seen juxtaposed against the unique backdrop offered by the Carlshütte and the adjacent historical sculpture park.
